You pay by the hour for PostgreSQL running on Ubuntu 20.04, packaged as a ready-to-deploy image. Pricing follows the EC2 instance type you choose to run it on. Each dimension maps to one instance size across families like t2, t3, m5, c5, r5, and larger memory- or compute-focused options. Smaller instances cost less per hour; larger instances with more CPU, memory, or specialized hardware cost more. Your total depends on the instance size selected and the hours it runs. You can stop charges by stopping the instance, since billing is usage-based.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly charge cover for a given instance type?
Each hourly rate covers one running EC2 instance of that size, preloaded with PostgreSQL on Ubuntu 20.04. The rate reflects the CPU, memory, and any specialized hardware tied to that instance family. You are billed for each hour the instance runs, per instance you launch.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or paused?
Software charges accrue only while the instance runs. Stopping the instance halts the hourly software charge. Stopped instances may still incur AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but the software metering counts running hours only.
How do I move to a bigger or smaller instance if my needs change?
You launch a different instance type, and billing follows that type's hourly rate. There is no tier upgrade to trigger; you simply run the size you need. Smaller sizes reduce your hourly charge, larger sizes raise it. Switching is manual, done by choosing the instance at launch.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
