What do I actually get for the hourly rate on each instance dimension?
Each dimension bills you for one running EC2 instance of that specific type, with Oracle Linux 8.6 preinstalled by Gigabits. The rate covers software support layered on the instance you launch. You choose the instance family and size that match your compute, memory, or storage needs. Underlying AWS infrastructure charges are separate.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or paused?
The software charge meters running hours only. When you stop an instance, hourly software billing stops. Restarting resumes the charge at the same per-hour rate for that instance type. Note that stopped instances may still incur AWS storage fees for attached volumes, which are billed separately by AWS.
How does my cost change if I switch to a larger instance type?
There are no tiers to upgrade. You launch a new instance of the type you want and begin paying that type's hourly rate. Larger families and sizes carry higher hourly rates. You control cost by choosing the instance that fits the workload, and you can change instance types anytime.
