You pay by the hour for Windows Server 2019 running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance type. Each dimension maps to one specific instance type, so pricing scales with the compute you select. The list covers many instance families, including general-purpose (M, T), compute-optimized (C), memory-optimized (R, X, Z, U), storage-optimized (D, H, I), and accelerated computing (G, P, DL, Inf, Trn, VT). Within each family, sizes range from nano and micro up to metal and multi-xlarge. Larger sizes carry more CPU and memory, so hourly cost rises accordingly. You are billed only for hours used.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I get for the hourly charge on each instance type?
Each dimension covers Windows Server 2019 running on one Amazon EC2 instance type. The hourly rate reflects that instance's CPU and memory size. You get the software image plus updates, firewalls, and network protocols. AWS charges for the underlying EC2 compute separately from this software rate.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or powered off?
The software rate meters running hours only. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue hourly software charges. You are billed only for the hours the instance runs. Underlying AWS storage or other resource fees may still apply while the instance is stopped.
If I switch to a bigger instance size, how does my cost change?
Cost follows the instance type you run. Each size maps to its own hourly rate. Moving to a larger size within a family adds CPU and memory, so the hourly rate rises. You are not locked to one type; you pay the rate for whichever instance runs each hour.
