Instead, each rate maps to a specific Amazon EC2 instance type you choose to run. The many options span general purpose, compute, memory, storage, and accelerated instance families in sizes from nano through metal. Smaller instances carry lower hourly rates; larger instances with more CPU, memory, or specialized hardware cost more per hour. You select the instance that fits your workload, and billing scales with the size you run and the hours used.

What does the hourly rate cover, and what does one instance-hour of billing map to?
Each rate maps to one specific EC2 instance type running for one hour. The charge covers the software: SQL Server 2019 Standard, Database Monitor, and the packaged operating system image. The listed rate is the software fee. You pay separate AWS charges for the underlying compute, storage, and network.
Am I charged the hourly software fee when my instance is stopped or paused?
The software fee meters running hours only. A stopped or paused instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. You may still pay underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes while stopped. Charges resume when you restart the instance and it runs again.
If I move to a larger instance type, how does my hourly bill change?
You pay the rate tied to whichever instance type you run. Switching to a larger instance with more CPU, memory, or specialized hardware applies that instance's higher hourly rate. Moving to a smaller type applies its lower rate. The change takes effect when the new instance runs.

Below is a step-by-step process on using SQL Server with Windows on AWS.
1. Getting Started with Windows on AWS
You can learn more about Windows usage on AWS through this AWS Windows page. This page contains resources on deploying Windows-based EC2 instances, licensing options, and using Microsoft services on AWS.
2. Logging in as Administrator
To log in to your AWS Windows instance as an Administrator, follow these steps:
Use the private key (.pem) file you generated when you created your EC2 instance to decrypt the Administrator password.
After obtaining the password, you can use it to log in to your Windows instance through Remote Desktop (RDP).
3. SQL Server and sa Account
By default, the sa (System Administrator) account in SQL Server is disabled for security reasons. You can log in using the local Windows Administrator account to manage SQL Server:
Open SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) from the Start Menu:
Navigate to Microsoft SQL Server Tools 18Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
In SSMS, log in with the Windows Authentication method using the local Windows Administrator credentials.
To enable the sa account:
In SQL Server Management Studio, go to Object Explorer --> expand your SQL Server instance --> Security --> Logins.
Right-click on the sa account --> Properties.
On the General tab, uncheck the Disabled box, and set a strong password.
Alternatively, you can create a new SQL Server login:
Right-click on Logins --> New Login.
Specify a username, password, and authentication method.
4. Launch SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)
To open SSMS, go to the Start Menu and search for Microsoft SQL Server Tools 18 --> Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
Once opened, you can connect to your SQL Server instance using either Windows Authentication or SQL Server Authentication
