If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the Hardened Ubuntu 22 image, based on the EC2 instance type you run. Each dimension maps to one specific AWS instance size, so there are no separate tiers or feature levels. Pricing scales with the compute you choose. Smaller instances like nano and micro cost less per hour, while larger sizes and bare-metal options cost more. Instance families cover general purpose, compute, memory, storage, GPU, and high-memory workloads. You pick the instance that fits your needs and pay only for the hours you use.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover for this image?
Each hourly unit covers one running EC2 instance of the size you select, such as t3.medium or m5.large. The software charge meters the hours that instance runs. If you run several instances, each one meters its own hours separately and appears on the same bill.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or powered off?
The software charge meters running hours only. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue software charges. You may still pay separate AWS fees for attached storage while the instance is stopped, but the image itself bills only for time the instance runs.
How does my cost change if I move to a larger instance type?
Switching instance types changes your hourly rate to match the new size you run. There is no tier upgrade or commitment. You simply launch the size you need and pay that instance's hourly rate for the hours it runs. Bare-metal and high-memory sizes carry higher hourly rates than smaller sizes.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
