You pay by the hour for RHEL 8 running on the AWS EC2 instance type you choose. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size, so there are no tiers or add-ons to combine. Pricing scales with the instance's compute capacity: smaller shared-core types like t2.nano and t3.micro cost less per hour, while large compute, memory, storage, and accelerated types such as m7i.48xlarge, x2iedn.metal, and p5.48xlarge cost more. You select one instance type, run it, and pay only for the hours it runs. Stop the instance to stop hourly charges.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billed hour include for a given instance type?
One hour covers the RHEL 8 software license running on the single EC2 instance type you launch. The rate reflects that instance's size and family. You pay for each hour the instance runs, billed per instance, not per user or per core.
Am I charged for the RHEL 8 software when my instance is stopped?
Hourly software charges apply only while the instance runs. Stopping the instance stops the software charges. A stopped instance may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for its volumes, but the RHEL 8 license meters running time only.
If I move to a bigger instance type, how does my hourly cost change?
You are billed at the rate for whichever instance type is running. Switching to a resource-heavier type, such as a large compute, memory, or accelerated size, raises the hourly rate. The change takes effect when you launch the new type. Only one type bills at a time.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
