One unit is one running EC2 instance of the type you pick, billed per hour. The rate covers the Ubuntu 18 hardened operating system with Patch Guard, including updates, firewalls, and network protocols. You pay the software rate per instance, on top of any separate AWS infrastructure charges.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or paused?
The hourly software rate meters running time only. A stopped or paused instance does not accrue software charges. If you stop an instance, billing for that instance halts until you start it again. Underlying AWS storage or other AWS fees may still apply separately from the software rate.
If I switch to a different instance type, how does my rate change?
Each instance type maps to its own hourly software rate. When you switch types, the new rate applies to the new instance for the hours it runs. Larger or more specialized families carry higher hourly rates. You can start, stop, or change types anytime and pay only for hours used.
