You pay by the hour for the software running on an Amazon EC2 instance. Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, so pricing scales with the size and family of compute you pick. Smaller shared instances like the t2 and t3 families sit at the low end. Larger general-purpose (m), memory-optimized (r and x), compute-optimized (c), and specialized GPU, storage, and high-memory families cost more per hour. You choose one instance type to match your workload, then billing accrues only for the hours you run it. There is no upfront commitment.

What does the hourly rate cover, and what does it exclude?
The hourly rate covers the software license for OpenVPN on Ubuntu 22 with the Connection Auditor, delivered as a 1-Click image on AWS. It does not include the underlying Amazon EC2 compute, storage, or data transfer, which AWS bills separately at its own rates.
Am I charged the software fee when my EC2 instance is stopped?
The software fee meters running instance-hours. When you stop the instance, the software charge stops accruing. Stopped instances may still incur AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but those are AWS charges, not the software license fee.
If I switch to a bigger instance type later, how does my bill change?
You pick one instance type and pay its hourly rate for the hours you run it. Moving to a larger family or size changes the hourly rate going forward. There is no upfront commitment, so you can change instance types as your workload needs shift.
