What does one hour of billing include, and what am I actually paying for?
You pay for one running EC2 instance of the type you select, for each hour it runs. The rate covers the preconfigured PostgreSQL image on CentOS 10, deployed with current updates. The hourly rate reflects the instance size and family you choose, from small shared types to bare metal.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or paused?
The hourly software charge meters running time only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the per-hour software fee. Note that underlying AWS storage and other resource fees may still apply while the instance is stopped, since those are billed separately by AWS.
If I switch from a small instance type to a larger one, how does my cost change?
The software layer stays identical across all instance types. Only the hourly rate changes, based on the type you launch. Moving to a larger memory-, compute-, or storage-optimized type raises your hourly rate. You are billed at the rate of whichever type is running at that time.
