Each hourly rate covers the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 software license and vendor support for one running EC2 instance of that type. The dimension name matches a specific EC2 instance size and family. You pick the instance that fits your compute needs and pay that instance's rate per hour.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or powered off?
The software charge meters running time only. A fully stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue the hourly software rate. You are billed just for the hours each instance actually runs. Note that underlying AWS storage or other AWS fees may still apply while an instance is stopped.
How is my bill affected if I run several different instance types at once?
Each running instance bills independently at its own hourly rate for that instance type. The charges add together on the same invoice. There is no shared pool or tier that spans instances. Total cost is the sum of each instance's rate multiplied by its running hours.
