What resource does one hourly charge cover, and how is it counted?
One hourly charge covers a single running EC2 instance with the hardened Ubuntu 24.04 image. Each launched instance meters its own hours separately. The software rate depends on the instance type you pick. AWS bills partial hours per its standard rules, so the meter tracks each instance's running time.
Am I charged the software rate when I stop or pause an instance?
The software rate meters running time only. When you stop or terminate an instance, the hourly software charge stops. Stopped instances may still incur standard AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but those are separate from this software charge and set by AWS.
How do I choose between a small burstable instance and a large compute or GPU instance for cost?
The software rate scales with the instance you select. Burstable and small general-purpose types carry lower hourly rates. Compute-optimized, memory-optimized, GPU, and bare-metal families carry higher rates matching their capacity.
