Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.

See AWS Free Tier for more details. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the running software image, billed per EC2 instance you launch. Pricing is not tiered by features. Instead, each rate maps to a specific EC2 instance type and size you choose. General-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, GPU, and high-performance families are all supported. Smaller sizes like nano and micro cost less per hour than larger sizes like metal and 96xlarge. Your hourly cost scales with the instance size you select. You run the same hardened WordPress software regardless of which instance you pick.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit actually cover for billing?
One unit is one running EC2 instance of the type you pick. The rate meters each instance-hour the image runs. If you launch three instances, each accrues its own hourly charge. The charge reflects the hardened WordPress software running on the instance size you select.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or paused?
The hourly software charge meters running time only. A stopped or fully powered-off instance does not accrue software charges. Underlying AWS fees, such as storage for the instance volume, may still apply while the instance is stopped, but the image itself meters running hours.
Does the software cost differ between instance families like compute-optimized and memory-optimized?
The software runs the same across all families. Your hourly rate maps to the specific instance type and size, so a memory-optimized size and a compute-optimized size of similar scale can differ. Cost tracks the instance you choose, not any feature difference in the image.
