What does one billing unit cover on this hourly rate?
One unit is one running EC2 instance of the type you select, billed per hour. The hourly software rate maps to a specific instance family and size. You pay for the hardened Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 image on top of the standard EC2 infrastructure charge for that instance.
Am I charged the software rate when my instance is stopped?
The hourly software charge applies only while an instance runs. Stopped or powered-off instances do not accrue the software rate. You may still pay standard AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but the image meters running hours only.
If I switch to a different instance type, how does my rate change?
Each instance type maps to its own hourly rate. Moving to a different family or size changes the rate to match that instance. Larger instances in a family carry higher hourly rates than smaller ones. You pay the rate for whichever instance is running.
