You pay by the hour for the running EC2 instance you choose. Pricing scales with instance size and family, not with software tiers. The software cost is the same across all instances; your hourly rate changes based on the compute, memory, and storage you select. Options span general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, and storage-optimized families, from small sizes up to bare-metal configurations. Larger instances with more resources cost more per hour. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs, so you can match the instance to your desktop workload needs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each instance runs a pre-built Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 LTS image with the Gnome graphical interface and NICE DCV for remote display. The instance name maps to a specific AWS EC2 size, defining the CPU, memory, and storage you receive. Your hourly rate reflects that hardware plus the software.
The software meters only running instance-hours. When you stop an instance, the hourly software charge stops accruing. Stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but those are separate from this software charge. Restarting resumes hourly billing.

- Launch the instance either via AWS MarketPlace wizard or EC2 console
NICE DCV Access
- Configure the Security Group to open Inbound TCP and UDP ports 8443 from your location or use default settings (open to the world)
- Download and install the NICE DCV client - https://docs.aws.amazon.com/dcv/latest/userguide/client.html
- When asked, provide the instance public ip to connect.
- The user is ubuntu.
- The password is the instance id.
Web Access
- Configure the Security Group to open Inbound TCP 8443 from your location or use default settings (not recommended)
- In your browser, access the instance ip using https and port 8443, for example: https://34.239.94.134:8443/
- The user is ubuntu.
- The password is the instance id.
SSH Access
- Configure the Security Group to open Inbound TCP port 22 from your location or 0.0.0.0/0 (open to the world)
- Use an SSH client (for example: https://www.putty.org ) to connect to the instance's IP on the port 22.
- Authenticate to the instance using the key pair selected during the instance launch. The user name is ubuntu.
Additional Information
Monitoring the Health of the instance
- Navigate to your Amazon EC2 console and verify that you're in the correct region.
- Choose Instance and select your launched instance.
- Select the server to display your metadata page and choose the Status checks tab at the bottom of the page to review if your status checks passed or failed.
Data Encryption
- This image does not provide encryption by default at the Operating System or Application level, customers are encouraged to enable EBS encryption during the Instance Launch: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/EBSEncryption.html
- EBS Encryption using the Default key enables key rotation

- Using EBS encryption, the decryption is done automatically when using the instance.
