What does one hourly unit cover, and how is the DCV desktop licensed?
Each hourly unit covers the software running on one EC2 instance of the size you pick. DCV is licensed by concurrent DCV desktops created, using a floating license. Licensing is not tied to named users, so you can create desktops as needed on the running instance.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
Hourly software charges apply only while the desktop runs on a chosen instance. When you stop or power off the instance, software charges stop. Underlying AWS storage fees for the stopped instance may still apply separately, since billing meters running time only.
How does picking a bigger instance change my hourly cost?
You choose one instance type per running desktop, and the hourly rate maps to that size. Moving to an instance with more CPU, memory, or storage raises the rate for all hours the desktop runs on it. The change is manual: you select the instance, not a tier upgrade.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. With DCV 2023 and later QUIC/UDP will be used automatically together with the DCV client. In the DCV client connection settings you can select TCP as well.
