Ubuntu Desktop 22.04 LTS - GUI Gnome with NICE DCV
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance type you launch. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size, from small general-purpose types like t2.small to large memory- and compute-optimized types like r6a.48xlarge. Pricing scales with the instance you choose: larger instances with more CPU, memory, or storage carry higher hourly rates. Instance families cover general-purpose (m, t), compute-optimized (c), memory-optimized (r), storage-optimized (i, d, h), and accelerated (f) workloads. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs, with no upfront commitment.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly rate cover, and what do I pay AWS separately?
The hourly rate covers the software licence for the pre-built Ubuntu Desktop image with the Gnome interface and NICE DCV remote display. You pay AWS separately for the underlying EC2 instance, storage, and data transfer. Both charges appear together on your AWS bill.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or shut down?
Software charges meter running time only. When you stop the instance, the hourly software charge stops accruing. Underlying AWS storage fees for the attached disk may still apply while the instance is stopped, but that is billed by AWS, not by the software licence.
How do I move to a bigger or smaller instance if my needs change?
Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, so you launch the size you need. To change size, you stop and relaunch on a different instance type. The hourly software rate then follows the new instance type you select. No commitment locks you to one size.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
