Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for the software running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance. Pricing is not tiered by feature. Instead, each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, so your rate depends on the size and family you select. Options span burstable instances (t2, t3, t3a), compute-focused instances (c4, c5, c5a), general-purpose instances (m4, m5, m5a), and memory-focused instances (r4, r5, r5a). Larger instance sizes within a family carry higher hourly rates. Metal options are also available. You only pay for the hours you run.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
The hourly rate covers the packaged software image and vendor support, layered on top of your chosen Amazon EC2 instance. It includes the pre-configured Mate desktop and VNC remote access setup. AWS charges for the EC2 instance and storage separately. You pay both charges together while the instance runs.
The software charge meters running time only. When you stop or power off the instance, the hourly software rate stops accruing. Underlying AWS storage fees for the disk may still apply while the instance exists. Restarting the instance resumes the hourly software charge.
Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type. Your rate reflects the size and family you pick. Burstable types (t2, t3, t3a) sit at one end. Compute (c), general-purpose (m), and memory (r) families scale up with more CPU or RAM. Metal options run on dedicated hardware. Bigger sizes cost more per hour.

Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

Usage instructions
- Launch the instance either via AWS MarketPlace wizard or EC2 console
VNC Access
- Configure the Security Group to open Inbound TCP port 5901 from your location or use default settings (open to the world)
- Use a VNC client (for example: https://www.realvnc.com/en/connect/download/viewer/ ) to connect to the instance's IP on the port 5901.
- The password is the first 8 characters of the Instance Id after the dash (Ex: for the instance id i-1a2b3c4d5e6f7g8h9 , the password would be 1a2b3c4d)
SSH Access
- Configure the Security Group to open Inbound TCP port 22 from your location or 0.0.0.0/0 (open to the world)
- Use an SSH client (for example: https://www.putty.org ) to connect to the instance's IP on the port 22.
- Authenticate to the instance using the key pair selected during the instance launch. The user name is ubuntu.
Additional Information
Monitoring the Health of the instance
- Navigate to your Amazon EC2 console and verify that you're in the correct region.
- Choose Instance and select your launched instance.
- Select the server to display your metadata page and choose the Status checks tab at the bottom of the page to review if your status checks passed or failed.
Data Encryption
- This image does not provide encryption by default at the Operating System or Application level, customers are encouraged to enable EBS encryption during the Instance Launch: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/EBSEncryption.html
- EBS Encryption using the Default key enables key rotation

- Using EBS encryption, the decryption is done automatically when using the instance.
- Customer data can be saved anywhere in the instance, however it is a good practice to save user data (including sensitive data) in the /home/<user-name> directory.
