See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance size you run this DNS server image on. There is no fixed subscription. Each dimension maps to a specific AWS instance type, so your cost scales with the compute you pick. Options include burstable t2, t3, and t3a families for lighter or variable workloads. The m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5ad, m5d, m5dn, and m5n families offer steady general-purpose capacity, with local storage or higher network throughput in some. Sizes range from nano and micro up to 24xlarge and bare-metal. Larger instances cost more per hour.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually get when I launch one of these hourly instances?
You get a ready-to-run virtual machine running the DNS server on Ubuntu 24.04. The DNS service starts automatically at boot. Your chosen EC2 instance type sets the CPU, memory, and network capacity. The hourly rate covers the software image on that instance size.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or paused?
The hourly software charge applies only while the instance runs. If you stop the instance, the software metering stops too. Underlying AWS storage fees for the disk may still apply while the instance is stopped, but those are separate from the software charge.
How do the burstable t-family and the general-purpose m-family instances differ for billing?
Both bill per hour with no upfront commitment. The t2, t3, and t3a families use burstable CPU that suits lighter or variable DNS traffic. The m3, m4, m5, and related families provide steady sustained compute. You pick one instance type per running server, and its size sets the hourly rate.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
