You pay by the hour for the software running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance. Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, so pricing scales with the compute size you pick. Options span burstable t2, t3, and t3a families for lighter or variable workloads, and general-purpose m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5d, m5n, m5ad, and m5dn families for steady workloads. Within each family, sizes range from nano and micro up to 24xlarge and bare-metal instances. Larger instances bring more CPU and memory and cost more per hour. You are billed only for hours used.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billing unit represent for each dimension?
Each dimension bills per hour of one running Amazon EC2 instance of that type. The instance type sets its CPU and memory. You launch a single virtual machine, and the software charge accrues for every hour that machine runs.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or powered off?
Software charges meter running instance-hours only. When you stop or power off the instance, the hourly software charge stops accruing. Underlying AWS storage fees for the attached volumes may still apply, but those are separate from this listing's per-hour software charge.
Do I need to open any ports for the software to work after launch?
Yes. To reach the Webmin interface, you open TCP 10000 and UDP 10000 in your Amazon security group. You then connect over your browser at the instance IP on port 10000 and accept a self-signed certificate. This setup does not change your hourly charge.
