Within each family, sizes range from nano and micro up to 24xlarge and metal. The software runs identically across all instances. Your hourly cost scales with the compute, memory, and storage of the instance you select.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
One unit is one running EC2 instance charged per hour. The software runs on the instance type you launch. Each active instance meters its own hourly rate. If you run several instances, each one accrues charges separately based on its size and family.
The software rate meters running time only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. Stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
The software runs the same across all instance types. Your hourly rate follows the instance family and size you select. Moving from a smaller size to a larger one raises the rate. Switching families like t3 to m5 also changes the rate based on compute, memory, and storage.
