My favorite part of re:Invent, this year and every year, is the opportunity it provides to hear directly from AWS Partners and customers. As always, I’m impressed by the value that partners are delivering for customers, and I’m encouraged at the opportunities ahead of us to continue innovating, simplifying, and delivering results. For any partners who weren’t able to attend on-site, I want to share what the worldwide public sector partners team is working on to better serve partners. Here are a few announcements you may have missed.

Natural disasters are devastating, often resulting in loss of life, massive property damage, and damage to the critical infrastructure that powers emergency services. This can prompt public sector organizations to consider building more resilient infrastructure. Such was the case for the 911 system in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, an agency that dispatches for 21 public safety agencies including law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services, and averages over 325 calls for service per day. After a major flood in 2016 knocked out their 911 system, they worked with AWS Partner TailorBuilt Solutions, LLC. to use AWS to become resilient against disaster, reducing service interruptions and improving response times.

According to the United States Constitution, public access to judicial proceedings is a right covered by the First and Sixth Amendments. To make hearings visible to the public, even when in-person attendance is limited, state and local governments are beginning to mandate many court proceedings be live streamed, often with a very short window to do so. The cloud-native media and asset management platform Nomad, which is built on AWS, helps governments implement scalable live streaming capabilities quickly and simply.

In June 2022, AWS Partner Coursera launched the annual Global Skills Report, an in-depth look at the state of skills globally. The Global Skills Report draws data from 100 million learners in more than 100 countries who have used Coursera, a global online learning platform, to develop a new skill during the past year. Building on the findings from the Global Skills Report, the following are four skills trends that workforce development leaders, like those in state and local government and education, should keep in mind as they strive to build an inclusive and competitive workforce.

In the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) 2022 Digital Competitiveness Index, Japan ranked 29th out of 63 countries, down one place from last year’s ranking. A 2021 white paper on information and communications by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications highlighted the gap between urban and rural digital transformation initiatives in Japan, with urban areas making more progress and local areas lagging behind. There is an urgent need to accelerate digital transformation across Japan to maintain and strengthen Japan’s competitiveness. AWS recently announced the global launch of the AWS Smart City Competency Program. Today, as governments and city leaders look to shape cities of the future, they are actively looking to meet citizen needs for smarter and more innovative urban services. The new AWS Smart City Competency Program will deliver proven partner recommendations to AWS customers and partner community to help them build and deploy innovative smart city solutions. As cities explore ways to digitally transform, there are a few key things to consider.

Citi Logik is a UK-based government technology (GovTech) company and AWS Partner with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Citi Logik uses AWS to enhance anonymised raw mobile network data (MND) so organisations can identify trends in the flow of people across a variety of different transportation modes. Citi Logik provides their customers, including the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Wiltshire County Council, with valuable insights to help them make informed decisions about future transportation planning and urban planning development.

Earlier this week, I was thrilled to host my first AWS Public Sector Partner Forum in advance of the AWS Summit Washington, DC. It was a wonderful opportunity to speak directly to AWS Partners about our journey together, share some exciting announcements, and have a conversation with other AWS leaders. Here are some highlights.

Public sector organizations can benefit from containers as they can enable building mission critical applications with better fault tolerance and agility, migrating applications across different platforms and in modernizing legacy applications. To help partners build containerized applications on behalf of public sector organizations, AWS is launching the AWS Containers Rapid Adoption Assistance (CRAA) initiative.
