You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance size that runs this VPN server. Each dimension maps to a specific AWS instance type, so pricing scales with the compute you choose. Smaller burstable types (the t2, t3, and t3a families) suit light workloads. General-purpose types (the m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5d, m5n, m5ad, and m5dn families) scale up through xlarge, 2xlarge, and larger sizes, including bare-metal options. You are billed only for the hours the instance runs. Pick the size that fits your traffic and connection load.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billing unit represent for this VPN server?
Each unit is one hour that a chosen EC2 instance runs. The instance is a single virtual machine sized by the type you pick. You pay per running hour, so cost accrues while the VM stays powered on. Stopping the instance stops the software hourly charge.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or paused?
The software meters running hours only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue hourly software charges. Underlying AWS storage fees may still apply while the volume exists. To pause billing for the VPN software, stop the instance in your AWS account.
What drives cost differences between the instance types listed?
The instance type sets your hourly rate based on its compute, memory, and network capacity. Burstable t2, t3, and t3a types cost less per hour than general-purpose m-family types. Larger sizes and bare-metal options carry higher hourly rates. Pick the size matching your VPN traffic and connection volume.
