    Amazon Machine Image (AMI)

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

    Usage instructions

    System Initialization:

After creating an EC2 instance with 1-Click, browse to http://<Public_DNS>/ for system initialization instructions.

Alternatively, log in via SSH as user 'admin' to the running instance. Be sure to use the SSH keypair selected during launch.

This inital step is required to set sensitive passwords & install security updates. You may also be asked to set a domain name for your server. If this is required, then it must be a valid domain name (i.e. have DNS configured).

Accessing the software main web app

    http://<Public_DNS>/

This may redirect to https and/or the domain set at initialisation.

    OS commands via SSH

Log into the running instance via SSH as user 'admin', using the SSH keypair set at launch time. Use sudo to run commands requiring root access.

Web based System Admin control panel

    https://<Public_DNS>:12321

    Remove scary browser warnings

By default TurnKey AMIs ship with randomly generated self signed SSL/TLS certifcates. This will cause scary warning in your web browser When accessing https.

To remove the browser warnings, you will need to get a SSL/TLS certificate signed by an authorized Certificate Authority (CA). The recommended way to do that is to get a free Let's Encrypt SSL certificate. TurnKey comes with a built in tool to do that within your instance:

    1. Ensure that you have your chosen domain DNS records configured and your domain resolves to your instance.

    2. Access your instance via SSH.

    3. Run 'sudo confconsole'.

    4. Select:

Advanced >> Lets Encrypt >> Gen cert

    For more info see: https://www.turnkeylinux.org/docs/confconsole

Secure client access has simplified cloud migrations and now enables fast remote connectivity

    Reviewed on Dec 11, 2025
Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

Our main use case for OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey  is to ensure secure access for our end customer during multiple migration opportunities. During the foundation readiness, we have to make sure that the customer environment will be securely accessed and to let our end customer access the migrated machines which have been recently migrated from on-premise to the public cloud in a secure manner. To let them communicate securely, we are using OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey  deployed in our foundation readiness to let them communicate securely.

With OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey, we have been able to simplify our client VPN communication with the migrated resources from on-premise data center to the public cloud. It is really efficient, quick, and secure way to let our end-user, customer user, or our operations team users communicate to deployed workload in the public cloud environment.

We are using OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey mainly for letting our roaming users communicate to the public cloud tenant resources securely.

    What is most valuable?

The best features that OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey offers are that it is really quick and efficient to let the client VPN connectivity enabled.

The client VPN connectivity is efficient for my team because it is really quick. All you need is one lightweight configuration server to be hosted in the public cloud environment. Once that is deployed, it allows your clients and vendors to communicate to the public cloud environment resources securely.

It is really secure because security is the primary perspective. Since we want our deployed resources in the public cloud to be securely accessed, OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey is the best way around to let those communications happen in a client VPN manner.

OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey has positively impacted my organization because it is really efficient. During the foundation readiness, we ensure that once workload gets migrated to the public clouds, whoever needs access to public cloud deployed resources has secure access. OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey came with a vital role to make sure that the deployed resources in the public cloud will be securely accessed.

I would say it has remarkably reduced our effort while looking at any third-party solution, making it really time-efficient and effective. It is not a time-consuming activity.

    What needs improvement?

All we are looking forward to is to know the configuration we have to follow if an N number of concurrent connections is required. For example, if it could have been 20 or 30, then what should be the OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey server configuration. We need this recommendation to be available to us.

The documentation from OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey is absolutely good and does not require any changes. My only recommendation is that the configuration with the desired capacity of the number of users who intend to access the cloud tenant resources via OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey should be given in their forum.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey for almost four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey is absolutely stable. With the configuration recommendation given by OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey, if you follow it, it is really scalable and redundant.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I do not see any challenge with the configuration in the public forum of OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey. If one follows it, they will never face any challenge with scalability. No matter the number of concurrent connections that need to be made, if one follows those recommendations of compute and memory configuration for OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey server deployment, it is really quick and efficient.

How are customer service and support?

I rate customer support for OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey a 10 out of 10.

How would you rate customer service and support?

I was evaluating Pritunl VPN solution prior to OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey.

    How was the initial setup?

I purchased OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey through the AWS Marketplace .

    What about the implementation team?

My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing is that it is really efficient and not on the higher side.

OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey has made a remarkable compute saving from the perspective when we need secure communication to connect to the AWS  cloud tenant. I would recommend OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey as a quick, efficient solution rather than looking forward to any other solution.

    What was our ROI?

I choose 10 out of 10 because it is really efficient from the time perspective. It has been able to save us a lot of efforts which we intend to look forward in the next generation firewall deployment because we really do not need one if we have a target requirement of client VPN communication to be enabled.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Secure cloud migrations have accelerated as our teams access critical workloads remotely

    Reviewed on Dec 11, 2025
Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

Our main use case for OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey  is to meet multiple requirements from our end customers where we have migration opportunities. We are building a foundation readiness for all our customers before we kick in any workload migration to the public cloud. Because security is a prime requirement from everyone, instead of looking at next generation firewalls to explicitly come into the picture where customers have been keenly looking forward to security readiness, we are using OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey  to ensure that all roaming users, client users, or their development teams will be able to securely access the resources being hosted or migrated to the public cloud environment.

A specific example of how I have used OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey in one of those customer migration projects is during the migration when we have multiple requirements where customers ask for their development teams to access the environment in parallel with what we have migrated to the public cloud. We are providing secure access so their development teams will be able to access the migrated machines in the public cloud which have recently been migrated from the on-premise data center.

My main use case for OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey is really simple and quick. Instead of looking at so many tools related to firewall management, you do not need to care about many things. OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey will be able to let you communicate with the public cloud environment. It is the best in class client VPN solution that one can opt for.

    What is most valuable?

The best features OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey offers include no restrictions in usage. It comes with minimal configuration from the computer side. All I need is a single machine running that will handhold all my client VPN requirements, and that is really quick.

When I say minimal configuration, all you need is their client VPN server to be deployed. Once it is ready, all your clients who need to access the cloud tenant will be able to do so while deploying a lightweight agent in their client systems. That is really quick. No matter what the agent configuration would be, you can make at least 20, 30, or 50 VPN user connections proportionally.

OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey has positively impacted my organization during the foundation readiness as we always look forward to shortlisting multiple tools. When we came to know that during migration projects or deployment projects we need our users from the development side to securely access the deployed or migrated resources, I searched for a way to get them access quickly. We came across OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey. It is really instant and quick to let them securely connect to the resources running in the public cloud.

This quick and secure access absolutely leads to measurable improvements, such as faster project timelines and increased user satisfaction. During the foundation readiness, we need to look forward to many tools' readiness concerning security and monitoring. While looking at security, OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey has measurably reduced our timelines and effectively given secure access to our clients' development resources with quick and efficient service.

    What needs improvement?

OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey can be improved by looking forward to recommendations regarding compute sizing, which is necessary. I have seen multiple third-party solutions demanding configurations based on compute and memory aspects. However, what I have learned from OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey is that it comes with minimal configuration, but I am always stringent about how many client VPN connections it can handle. There has to be some bifurcation regarding this.

I have not experienced any access lag so far or any performance issues. I do not see any problems with the configurations or recommendations provided by OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey for 100 or 200 users simultaneously, but I still foresee a need for some recommendations from OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey regarding the number of user connections it can handle given certain configurations.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey for almost four years in multiple customer projects.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey is absolutely stable in my experience with the configurations provided. We are able to ensure around 20 to 25 concurrent connections, and they are stable enough while connecting to the public cloud.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

From the scalability perspective, the recommendations given by OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey are absolutely correct. If you want to opt for a certain number of concurrent connections, we always have to look forward to a vertical scaling of OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey server. I really appreciate that the configurations provided meet our expectations while looking for concurrent connections.

How are customer service and support?

Customer support for OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey is fantastic, though I have needed to reach out to them only sometimes. We always receive the required responses from the support team.

How would you rate customer service and support?

    Negative

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were not using any solution by TurnKey previously, but we were using something called Pritunl. However, that is not as secure, nor does it follow the required governance. Before choosing OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey, we were actually using Pritunl.

    How was the initial setup?

We mainly deploy OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey for a public cloud.

For deploying OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey, I use AWS .

I purchased OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey through the AWS Marketplace .

    What was our ROI?

I have seen a return on investment as it is really quick to install, where a lot of my security efforts get reduced. It is effective because within five to ten minutes you can configure it from the marketplace, and you are all set up to let your development and users access the environment in a secure manner.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing is that it is really minimal. I appreciate the pricing compared to other competitors.

What other advice do I have?

If one seeks a secure connection quickly and efficiently, I recommend looking into OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey instead of any third-party solution. It is really quick to let you access your environment no matter what hyperscaler you use. It leads you to connect your environment securely and efficiently, and it is really time efficient since you do not have to bother with configuring any next-generation firewall or other configurations to enable client VPN connections for your setup.

OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey is doing really well. I appreciate what the OpenVPN  team has done to ensure it is efficient and quick for the end customer or partner to begin migrations securely, allowing their stakeholders to communicate with the public cloud environment securely. I rate OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey a perfect 10 out of 10.

After a fresh install, when you generate the client profile, you normally get timeouts. For this to fix, add the following lines in your server.conf file which is located as /etc/openvpn/server.conf,
    The lines are,

    cipher AES-256-CBC
    auth SHA256

After adding these lines, restart the openvpn servive by using,
    systemctl restart openvpn
Also, reboot the instance for any unknown changes to be applied.

    Reviewed on May 14, 2024
    Review provided by PeerSpot

    What is most valuable?

We use the solution to connect to our internal infrastructure in our data center. We also use it to run our virtual machines on servers protected by OpenVPN in the internal network. The solution's connection is very fast, and I don't have any problems with its speed.

    What needs improvement?

I would like to get less updates from the solution.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for a couple of years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the solution ten out of ten for stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Around 50 users are using the solution in our organization.

    How was the initial setup?

The solution’s initial setup is easy.

    What about the implementation team?

The solution can be deployed easily within a few minutes.

    What was our ROI?

The solution is easy to use and doesn't need to be maintained daily.

What other advice do I have?

We have one system administrator who maintains this product on the server side. OpenVPN Community Edition is small, convenient for our purposes, and works fine. I would recommend the solution to other users who want to protect their internal infrastructure because it is not a complex product and doesn't require many people to manage it.

Overall, I rate the solution ten out of ten.

Offers a user-friendly UI and remote access of PCs to users

    Reviewed on Mar 12, 2024
    Review provided by PeerSpot

How has it helped my organization?

The benefit experienced by my company from the product's use stems from the fact that the solution allows us to have the convenience of remotely using company PCs.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of the solution are its stability and user-friendly UI.

    What needs improvement?

The product's initial setup phase is not straightforward, making it an area where improvements are required.

For how long have I used the solution?

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability in the connections provided by the product is good.

Stability-wise, I rate the solution a seven to eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

There are around 100 end users of the solution in my company.

There are plans to increase the use of the solution in my company, especially to help people who want to connect remotely with their company's PCs.

How are customer service and support?

I would only contact the technical support team if my account is being deleted.

    How was the initial setup?

The product's initial setup phase was a little bit complex because there was a need to work on the configuration part.

For the deployment process, you need access to an executable file, which can be a .ASA file, along with a configuration file to edit. When you open the application, you have to put in the config file in the software and then run it to make it work.

The solution is deployed on an on-premises model.

The solution can be deployed in a few hours. If you have some assistance from the IT service or IT team, the deployment can be done within a few hours.

    What about the implementation team?

I take care of the deployment process with the help of the product's documents.

What other advice do I have?

I use the product on my PC in the company for remote access.

I am not sure whether the product has enhanced data security in my company, but I use OpenVPN Community Edition - powered by TurnKey , whenever I need access to the PCs in my company to work remotely.

Speaking about how the encryption technology in the product meets our company's privacy requirements, I would say that I think it depends on the policy of the organization, about which I don't really know much.

I would tell those who plan to use the product that it is one of the popular software solutions.

The product is very good in terms of reliability and the performance offered to its users.

I rate the tool an eight out of ten.
