Multi-Provider DNS synchronization

Multi-Provider DNS synchronization
Synchronize Route 53 DNS with IBM Cloud Sync
IBM NS1 Connect and Cloud Sync together provide a multi-provider DNS architecture for Amazon Route 53 environments, combining intelligent DNS traffic management with automated cross-provider synchronization.
IBM NS1 Connect provides an intelligent DNS platform with traffic steering and DNS control capabilities, while Cloud Sync continuously translates and synchronizes DNS configurations between providers. Together, they enable organizations to expand existing Route 53 deployments with active multi-provider DNS without redesigning applications or maintaining custom synchronization tooling.
Amazon Route 53 does not support DNS zone transfer (AXFR/IXFR). Even in environments where zone transfer is available, it cannot preserve advanced routing logic, ALIAS records, health checks or provider-specific traffic steering behaviour. As a result, many teams attempt to build custom synchronization scripts, which introduce operational overhead, complexity and configuration drift.
Cloud Sync replaces these approaches with continuous API-based DNS synchronization, preserving routing intent and application behaviour across providers without requiring custom tooling. Cloud Sync automatically builds and maintains fully functional provider-native configurations that support active production traffic, eliminating DNS as a single point of failure while enabling organizations to benefit from IBM NS1 Connects intelligent DNS capabilities.
How Cloud Sync Works
- Define a primary DNS provider (Amazon Route 53 or NS1 Connect).
- Cloud Sync detects DNS changes in near real time.
- Changes are translated and propagated across providers, including traffic steering policies, health checks and ALIAS records.
- Both DNS environments, Route 53 and NS1 Connect, remain active, synchronized and production ready.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does IBM Cloud Sync work with Amazon Route 53?
IBM Cloud Sync synchronizes DNS zones, records, traffic steering metadata, and health checks between Amazon Route 53 and IBM NS1 Connect without requiring DNS zone transfer (XFR).
What DNS data can be synchronized?
Cloud Sync supports DNS zones, standard DNS records, ALIAS records, traffic steering configurations, and health check metadata.
Do the bundles offered include both IBM NS1 Connect and Cloud Sync?
Yes, all AWS Marketplace bundles include a certain volume of queries, records, traffic steering filter chains and health check monitors, as well as Cloud Sync.
What happens to my existing Amazon Route 53 environment?
Your existing Amazon Route 53 zones, configurations and workflows remain unchanged. Cloud Sync works alongside Amazon Route 53, synchronizing DNS data to NS1 Connect without affecting your AWS ownership or access.
Can Amazon Route 53 or NS1 Connect be the primary DNS?
Yes. Cloud Sync keeps DNS configurations aligned across Amazon Route 53 and NS1 Connect, allowing either provider to be designated as authoritative on a per-zone basis, depending on your architecture, policies, and resilience requirements. Cloud Sync does not enforce authority, it supports the multi-provider DNS model you choose.
Is Cloud Sync available with a higher or different volume of queries to what is listed?
Yes. A custom volume of queries, records etc can be configured to meet your needs and Cloud Sync is available to be purchased with that package. Please contact sales to help you create the right solution for your needs.
Highlights
- Eliminate DNS Single-Provider Risk: Operate synchronized, production-ready DNS across Amazon Route 53 and IBM NS1 Connect. Both environments remain active and capable of serving traffic, improving application resilience and reducing dependency on a single DNS provider.
- Preserve advanced routing logic across providers: Cloud Sync continuously detects configuration changes and propagates translated updates in near real time, ensuring NS1 Connect and Route 53 remain operationally aligned. Complex routing behavior, including traffic steering and health checks, is preserved consistently across both providers preventing configuration drift.
- Gain intelligent DNS capabilities with NS1 Connect: utilize NS1 Connects intelligent traffic steering and DNS control plane. Deploy active multi-provider DNS while preserving advanced routing behaviour and preserving Route 53 investments.
