Overview
The challenge: As enterprises scale on AWS, DNS quickly becomes the bottleneck between the data center and the cloud. On-premises Infoblox DNS cannot answer for Route 53 private hosted zones, workloads in hundreds of AWS accounts cannot resolve corporate domains, and every new account or zone turns into a ticket, a firewall change and a manual DNS update. Self-managed DNS forwarders on EC2 add patching, scaling and availability risk to one of the most critical services you run.
Our solution: Storm Reply designs, deploys and operates a central, fully AWS-native hybrid DNS platform that we have built and run in a large-scale enterprise production environment spanning multiple AWS Organizations and four AWS Regions. A dedicated DNS account hosts a central DNS VPC with Amazon Route 53 Resolver inbound and outbound endpoints, deployed across three Availability Zones in every participating Region. Outbound forwarding rules for your corporate domains are shared once via AWS Resource Access Manager with your AWS Organization, so every spoke VPC resolves on-premises names through the same governed path. In the other direction, your Infoblox Grid conditionally forwards cloud domains and AWS service endpoints to the inbound endpoints, making Route 53 the authoritative source for everything that lives in AWS.
Route 53 to Infoblox synchronization: The core differentiator is our automated zone sync module. Application teams keep full ownership of their Route 53 private hosted zones in their own accounts and simply tag a zone to make it resolvable from the corporate network. Serverless AWS Lambda automation discovers tagged zones, registers them with the Infoblox Grid through the Infoblox API using least-privilege, read-only Route 53 access with credentials held in AWS-managed secret storage, and keeps zone data continuously in sync. Cross-account private hosted zone associations and VPC association authorizations are automated as Landing Zone functionality, so onboarding a new account or VPC requires no manual DNS work on either side.
Built for operations: The platform has no EC2 instances and no persisted data. All components are delivered as Infrastructure as Code through a CI/CD pipeline, which means a Region or account can be redeployed from scratch within minutes and recovery is identical to deployment. Endpoints in the remaining Availability Zones and Regions continue to serve queries if one fails. Amazon CloudWatch dashboards provide black-box health views of query volume, top talkers and endpoint health, while CloudWatch alarms and Amazon SNS raise incidents directly into your ITSM tool. Resolver endpoint access is restricted via security groups, and DNS traffic and flow logs are retained in CloudWatch Logs for troubleshooting and audit.
What is included: (1) Assessment and design - review of your current DNS landscape, domain strategy, Infoblox setup, network paths and AWS multi-account structure, resulting in a target architecture and Region rollout plan. (2) Implementation - deployment of the central DNS account and VPC, Route 53 Resolver endpoints, shared forwarding rules, Landing Zone integration and the Route 53 to Infoblox sync module, including the firewall and conditional forwarding changes required on-premises. (3) Validation - structured test procedures covering on-premises to AWS, AWS to on-premises and AWS-internal cross-account resolution, plus DNS trace analysis for delegation issues. (4) Handover - an operations concept with RACI for incident, change, problem and capacity management, runbooks, escalation matrix and role-based training for 1st, 2nd and 3rd level support. (5) Optional managed service - 2nd and 3rd level operations by our DevOps team with business-hours support and 24x7 on-call for priority 1 and 2 incidents, new-Region rollouts, domain onboarding and continuous improvement.
Who it is for: Enterprises running a multi-account AWS environment alongside an existing Infoblox DDI infrastructure, platform and Landing Zone teams who need DNS to scale with account vending, and organizations migrating workloads to AWS that must keep corporate name resolution consistent across both worlds.
Why Storm Reply: As an AWS Premier Tier Services Partner, we specialize in enterprise Landing Zones, multi-account networking and platform operations for large industrial and automotive customers. This offering packages a solution we have designed, built and operated in production, so you benefit from proven architecture, tested automation and a ready-to-use operating model instead of starting from a blank page.
Highlights
- Seamless bidirectional hybrid DNS: Route 53 Resolver inbound and outbound endpoints in a central DNS VPC connect on-premises Infoblox and Amazon Route 53. Forwarding rules are shared once via AWS Resource Access Manager with your whole AWS Organization, so every account and VPC resolves corporate and cloud domains through one governed, auditable path - with no self-managed DNS servers to patch or scale.
- Zero-touch onboarding with automated Route 53 to Infoblox sync: Application teams keep ownership of their private hosted zones and simply tag them. Serverless automation registers tagged zones with the Infoblox Grid via the Infoblox API using least-privilege, read-only access and keeps them in sync, while cross-account zone associations are handled as Landing Zone functionality. New accounts and zones become resolvable on-premises without tickets.
- Production-proven and operations-ready: Fully serverless, multi-AZ and multi-Region, delivered as Infrastructure as Code via CI/CD with no persisted state - recovery equals redeployment in minutes. Includes CloudWatch dashboards, SNS alerting into your ITSM, defined test procedures, a complete operations concept with RACI and training, and optional managed operations with 24x7 on-call for critical incidents.
