Ubuntu 24.04 LTS hardened to the CIS Benchmark Level 1 with a documented exceptions list, for x86_64 instances. A Graviton (arm64) edition is listed separately. Each instance gets its own SSH host keys, machine identity and TLS key on first boot, and builds its own file-integrity (AIDE) baseline a few minutes later. Security updates install automatically. Every release ships with its CIS audit results. Ubuntu is open-source software; charges cover hardening, maintenance and support by IOanyT Innovations.

AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
You pay by the hour for the hardened Ubuntu 24.04 image, billed per running EC2 instance. Pricing follows the instance type you launch, so cost scales with compute size. The t3 family covers general-purpose burstable sizes from medium to 2xlarge. The m7i family adds balanced general-purpose sizes, the c7i family targets compute-focused workloads, and the r7i family suits memory-focused workloads. Within each family, hourly rates rise from large through 4xlarge as the instance gets bigger. Choose the family and size that fit your workload; the same hardened software runs on all of them.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What spec do I get for each hourly instance type, and what defines one billing unit?
One unit is one running EC2 instance of the type you pick. The t3 sizes are burstable general-purpose. The m7i sizes are balanced general-purpose, c7i are compute-focused, and r7i are memory-focused. Each step from large to 4xlarge adds more vCPU and memory. You pay per instance-hour.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
Software charges meter running instance-hours. A fully stopped instance does not accrue hourly software charges. Stopped instances may still incur separate AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but those are AWS charges, not the hardened image software charge. Charges resume when you restart the instance.
If I move to a bigger instance type, how does my bill change?
Each instance type has its own hourly rate, and the rate rises as the size grows from large to 4xlarge. Switching to a bigger type means you pay that type's hourly rate for the hours it runs. There is no automatic tier upgrade; you choose the type at launch.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Version release notes
Initial release: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS hardened to CIS Benchmark Level 1, for x86_64 instances.
Additional details
Usage instructions
Launch the instance. Allow TCP 22 from your own network only (never 0.0.0.0/0).
Connect: ssh -i your-key.pem ubuntu@<instance-ip>
Use sudo for administration; the root account is locked.
Security updates install automatically. Run sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade for everything else.
Some unused filesystem modules (NFS/EFS, FUSE, Docker overlay) are disabled by CIS hardening. To re-enable them, delete /etc/modprobe.d/ioanyt-cis-unused-fs.conf and reboot.
