Infrastructure Requirements
To ensure a smooth deployment, provision your EC2 instance with the following minimum specifications:
- RAM: 4 GB minimum for smaller installations
- Storage: 20 GB hard disk minimum
- Larger teams: For multi-project setups or teams running many concurrent builds, select a larger instance type with additional CPU, memory, and storage
Getting Started After Launch
Once your EC2 instance is running, access the Jenkins web portal by navigating to http://your-instance-public-ip:8080 in your browser. Ensure your AWS security group allows inbound traffic on port 8080 (Jenkins UI) and port 22 (SSH access). From there, complete the initial setup wizard to configure your admin credentials, install recommended plugins, and connect your source code repositories.

You get a pre-built Jenkins server image running on the EC2 instance type you select. The software is hardened and ready for CloudWatch monitoring and SSM management. The hourly charge covers the licensed image; you also pay AWS separately for the underlying compute and storage.
The hourly software charge applies only while the instance runs. A stopped instance stops accruing software charges. You may still pay AWS storage fees for the attached volumes even when the instance is powered off, since the disk data is retained.
Two things multiply together: the hourly rate of the instance type you pick, and the number of hours it runs. Larger types like the 24xlarge and metal sizes carry higher hourly rates. The Jenkins software is identical across all types, so size choice alone drives cost differences.
