Infrastructure Requirements
To ensure a smooth deployment, provision your EC2 instance with the following minimum specifications:
- RAM: 4 GB minimum for smaller installations
- Storage: 20 GB hard disk minimum
- Larger teams: For multi-project setups or teams running many concurrent builds, select a larger instance type with additional CPU, memory, and storage
Getting Started After Launch
Once your EC2 instance is running, access the Jenkins web portal by navigating to http://your-instance-public-ip:8080 in your browser. Ensure your AWS security group allows inbound traffic on port 8080 (Jenkins UI) and port 22 (SSH access). From there, complete the initial setup wizard to configure your admin credentials, install recommended plugins, and connect your source code repositories.
Jenkins Build Agents
Like other industry-standard CI/CD platforms, Jenkins uses agents as worker nodes for distributed job processing. Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for a preconfigured Jenkins server image running on your chosen EC2 instance. Pricing is not tiered by features. Instead, each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type, so your rate depends only on the compute size you select. The list spans several instance families: burstable t2 and t3/t3a options for lighter workloads, general-purpose m6i and m6id, and memory-focused r5 and r5a. Within each family, sizes scale from nano and micro up through large multi-xlarge and bare-metal instances. Larger instances carry higher hourly rates. You can change instance types as your build needs shift.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You get a preconfigured Jenkins server image running on the EC2 instance type you pick. The image is hardened and ready for CloudWatch monitoring and SSM management. The hourly rate covers the software licence on that instance. Underlying AWS compute and storage are billed separately by AWS.
The software fee meters running time only. When you stop or power off the instance, the hourly software charge stops accruing. Note that attached AWS storage such as EBS volumes may still incur separate AWS fees while the instance is stopped, since those are billed by AWS, not the software licence.
Your hourly rate maps to whichever single EC2 instance type is running. If you launch a new instance type, billing follows that type's hourly rate. Charges are not tiered by features, so moving from a burstable t3 to a memory-focused r5, for example, only changes the compute size and its rate.
