See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the SFTP Secure Server running on Windows Server 2022. Pricing is tied to the EC2 instance type you choose, so the software rate scales with the compute size you select. Options range from small burstable instances like t3.nano and t2.micro up to memory-, compute-, and GPU-heavy types such as x1e.32xlarge, r5.24xlarge, and p3dn.24xlarge. Larger instances add more CPU, memory, or specialized hardware and carry higher hourly rates. You run only one instance size at a time and can stop billing by stopping the instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What resource size do I get with each hourly instance option?
Each option maps to an AWS EC2 instance type, which sets your CPU, memory, and any specialized hardware. Small burstable types like t3.nano offer minimal resources. Larger types like r5.24xlarge add more memory, while p3dn.24xlarge adds GPUs. You pick one size to match your file transfer load.
Am I charged the hourly software rate when the instance is stopped?
The software rate meters running instance-hours only. When you stop the instance, the hourly software charge stops accruing. Underlying AWS storage fees for the disk may still apply while the instance is stopped. Start the instance again to resume file transfer service and hourly billing.
Do I pay separately for the software and the AWS compute?
Your bill combines two charges on the same invoice. The hourly software rate covers the SFTP Secure Server on Windows Server 2022. The AWS EC2 instance charge covers the compute you run it on. Both scale with the instance size you choose and both accrue only while the instance runs.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
