Jakarta EE 11 application server for migrating mission-critical workloads off WebLogic, WebSphere, or JBoss with no code rewrite and monthly security patches.
Azul Payara Server - Mission-Critical Jakarta EE Application Server
Azul Payara Server is a Jakarta EE 11 certified application server built for mission-critical production workloads. Teams can migrate off Oracle WebLogic, IBM WebSphere, or Red Hat JBoss EAP without rewriting application code. Existing Jakarta EE applications lift and shift to the namespace-matched Azul Payara version in days to weeks, with no code rewrite and no framework migration required. Security fixes are backported across Azul Payara 4 through 7, so known CVEs can be remediated in place rather than by moving to a new major version. Azul is a registered CVE Numbering Authority. Azul Payara Server runs in production at organizations including BMW Group, Rakuten Card, and the United States Coast Guard.
Key Benefits
Migrate without a rewrite: Move mission-critical applications off WebLogic, WebSphere, or JBoss EAP to a namespace-matched Azul Payara version with no code changes.
Backported security fixes: CVEs are addressed within the version your application already runs, so remediation does not require a major-version upgrade. Azul is a registered CVE Numbering Authority.
Broad version coverage: Namespace-matched builds spanning Azul Payara 4 through 7, so you can deploy the version your application already targets.
Runs on AWS: Optimized for Docker and Kubernetes, with native deployment on AWS infrastructure.
Ideal Workloads
High-availability, high-throughput transaction systems in financial services and telecom
Regulated, audit-sensitive workloads under PCI DSS, ISO 27001, or government mandates, where CVEs must be remediated in place without a major-version upgrade
Large-scale monolithic and modular-monolith applications
Multi-tenant applications with fine-grained access control
Runtime swap from Eclipse GlassFish, using the same asadmin CLI and domain model
Adding AI features to existing Jakarta EE applications with Azul Payara 7
Platform Capabilities
Intuitive admin console: Lowers operational complexity and training requirements for your team.
AI-ready on Azul Payara 7: Jakarta Concurrency 3.1 and Jakarta Data 1.0 bring AI features into the existing CDI container, with no second runtime to operate and patch.
Telemetry and observability: Built-in Payara InSight monitoring surfaces performance issues before they become outages, without deploying a separate APM agent.
Extended notification service: Incidents reach the team where they already work, including Slack, Datadog, New Relic, Microsoft Teams, email, JMX, JMS, and SNMP.
Integrated SSL certificate management: Certificates are managed in the server itself, with no external certificate tooling.
Diagnostics tool: One command collects the full diagnostic bundle, shortening time to resolution.
Security backporting: CVE fixes are delivered for the release your application already runs, so remediation does not require a major-version upgrade.
Version Compatibility
Azul Payara 7 (latest): Jakarta EE 11, jakarta namespace, Java SE 21 and 25, MicroProfile 6
Azul Payara 6: Jakarta EE 10, jakarta namespace, Java SE 11, 17, and 21, MicroProfile 6.1
Azul Payara 5: Java EE 8, javax namespace, Java SE 8, 11, 17, and 21, MicroProfile 4.1
Azul Payara 4: Java EE 7, javax namespace, Java SE 7 and 8, MicroProfile 1.2
Developer Tooling
Build, test, and ship faster with tools built for Azul Payara Server. Azul Payara Starter scaffolds projects with Maven or Gradle, including AI-assisted ERD generation. The Server Upgrade Tool and Upgrade Advisor simplify moving between major versions. IDE plugins for Eclipse, IntelliJ, NetBeans, and VS Code, along with connectors for Kafka, Amazon SQS, Azure Service Bus, and MQTT, round out the toolchain.
Compatibility Notes
Azul Payara Server runs on any compatible JDK. Spring applications packaged as standard WAR files deploy to Azul Payara Server like any Jakarta EE archive, which suits teams with mixed application portfolios.
Highlights
Lift-and-shift migration from WebLogic, WebSphere, and JBoss EAP without a code rewrite. Existing Jakarta EE and Java EE applications move to the namespace-matched Azul Payara version in days to weeks with no framework migration required. Customers such as BMW Group achieved a 55% to 80% reduction in commercial application server support costs.
Monthly security patches on a published schedule, backported to every supported major version. Azul is a registered CVE Numbering Authority under CISA and DHS oversight, delivering the patch velocity enterprises need as AI-driven exploits shorten mean time to exploit. Multi-phase lifecycle support across Azul Payara versions 4 through 7 - Full, Extended, and Lifetime Support - means upgrades happen on your schedule, not a vendor's end-of-life notice.
Built-in observability and operational tooling reduce dependency on third-party software. Payara InSight monitoring provides real-time visibility without separate APM licensing. The Extended Notification Service integrates with Slack, Datadog, New Relic, MS Teams, email, JMX, JMS, and SNMP. Integrated SSL certificate management, a one-command diagnostics tool, and an intuitive admin console lower operational complexity.

You pay by the hour based on the AWS EC2 instance you run this Jakarta EE application server on. Two instance sizes are available. The t3.medium is a smaller, burstable compute option. The m5.large offers more consistent compute capacity. Both bill per hour, so your cost scales with how long each instance runs and how many you deploy. Pick the instance that matches your workload's compute needs. There is no long-term commitment; charges accrue only while instances run.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What compute specs come with the t3.medium and m5.large hourly options?
The t3.medium is a burstable instance with baseline CPU that can burst when needed, suited to variable or lighter workloads. The m5.large provides steady, dedicated compute for consistent transaction processing. You pick the shape matching your workload, and billing meters running instance-hours for whichever you choose.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or paused?
Hourly software charges accrue only while an instance runs. A fully stopped instance stops accruing the per-hour software fee. Underlying AWS resources like attached storage may still incur separate AWS charges, but the software meter counts running time only.
Is the Java runtime (JDK) included in this hourly price?
No. Azul Payara Server runs on any compatible JDK. Azul Core, Azul's supported build of the Java runtime, is a separate product downloaded and licensed separately. The benefit is one vendor for both the runtime and the application server, not a bundled charge.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Once the instance is running, connect over SSH using your private key. For example, ssh -i privatekey.pem ubuntu@ec2-22-22-222.compute-1.amazonaws.com. Payara Server is installed at /opt/payara-server, running on Azul Zulu 21. Start the default domain with /opt/payara-server/bin/asadmin start-domain. Once started, the admin console is available at http://<public-dns>:4848 and deployed applications are served on http://<public-dns>:8080. Deploy an application with /opt/payara-server/bin/asadmin deploy /path/to/app.war. Ensure the instance's security group allows inbound access on ports 4848 (admin console) and 8080 (HTTP) if these need to be reached externally.
