Lightweight, production-ready, cloud-native Jakarta EE runtime for containerizing existing apps without application code rewrites and offering monthly security patches.
Azul Payara Micro is a certified microservices runtime for Jakarta EE and MicroProfile applications, built for containerizing and modernizing mission-critical workloads. Packaged as a single JAR of approximately 100 MB that starts in approximately two to five seconds, it lets teams containerize existing Jakarta EE applications for Docker and Kubernetes without rewrites, then modernize toward microservices incrementally. Teams can migrate off Oracle WebLogic, IBM WebSphere, or Red Hat JBoss EAP without rewriting application code. Existing Jakarta EE applications lift and shift to the namespace-matched Azul Payara version in days to weeks, with no framework migration required. The same application code that runs on Payara Server runs unchanged on Micro. Built-in automatic clustering and elastic scaling make it suitable for both legacy modernization and new cloud-native development. Security fixes are backported across Azul Payara 4 through 7, so known CVEs can be remediated in place rather than by moving to a new major version. Azul is a registered CVE Numbering Authority. Azul Payara runs in production at organizations including BMW Group, Rakuten Card, and the United States Coast Guard.
Key Benefits:
Migrate without a rewrite. Move mission-critical applications off WebLogic, WebSphere, or JBoss EAP to a namespace-matched Azul Payara version with no code changes.
Backported security fixes. CVEs are addressed within the version your application already runs, so remediation does not require a major-version upgrade.
Broad version coverage. Namespace-matched builds spanning Azul Payara 4 through 7, so you can containerize the version your application already targets.
One archive, two deployment modes. The same WAR file runs on Azul Payara Micro and Azul Payara Server, so your team picks the deployment shape without changing code.
Automatic clustering. Hazelcast-based dynamic clustering with autodiscovery. Nodes join the cluster with no manual configuration.
Certified compatibility. Jakarta EE and MicroProfile certified, so standards-based applications behave predictably across environments.
Highlights
Containerize legacy Jakarta EE apps without a code rewrite. Existing WebLogic, WebSphere, JBoss EAP, or GlassFish applications move to the namespace-matched Azul Payara version in days to weeks. The same .war runs on both Azul Payara Server and Azul Payara Micro, so teams pick the deployment shape - full application server or single-JAR microservice - without changing code.
AI-era security from a registered CVE Numbering Authority. Monthly security patches ship on a published schedule and are backported to every supported major version (Azul Payara 4 through 7). Multi-phase lifecycle support - Full, Extended, and Lifetime - across concurrent versions means upgrades happen on your schedule. Choose Standard or Premium enterprise-grade support delivered by the engineers who own the Payara codebase, with guaranteed SLAs.
Cloud-native by design with fast startup and a small footprint. A single executable JAR of roughly 100 MB starts in two to five seconds, keeping container images small and CI/CD pipelines fast. Hazelcast-based automatic clustering with auto-discovery eliminates manual node configuration. Built-in MicroProfile provides Config, Health, Metrics, OpenAPI, Fault Tolerance, and JWT Auth out of the box. Runs on Docker, Kubernetes, and serverless environments on AWS, Azure, and GCP.

You pay by the hour based on the AWS EC2 instance you run this runtime on. Two instance sizes are available: m5.large and t3.medium. Each carries its own hourly rate, so your cost scales with the instance type you pick and how many hours it runs. There is no upfront commitment. Choose the smaller t3.medium for lighter workloads or the m5.large for more capacity. Billing continues for as long as each instance stays running, so total cost depends on your instance choice and runtime hours.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do the m5.large and t3.medium dimensions actually represent, and how are hours counted?
Each dimension maps to an AWS EC2 instance type that runs the runtime. The software charge meters each hour an instance runs. You pick the instance size, and billing accrues per running hour on that instance. Larger instances carry more vCPU and memory capacity than smaller ones.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped, for example during off-hours or autoscale-down?
The software charge meters running instance-hours only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software fee. Underlying AWS storage or other AWS resource fees may still apply while an instance is stopped, but the runtime license bills for active hours.
Does this hourly listing include the Java runtime (JDK), or is that separate?
The runtime runs on any compatible JDK. Azul Core, Azul's supported JDK, is a separate Azul product and is not bundled here. The benefit described is one vendor for both the runtime and the JVM, not a single package. This hourly charge covers the runtime only.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Once the instance is running, connect over SSH using your private key. For example, ssh -i privatekey.pem ubuntu@ec2-22-22-222.compute-1.amazonaws.com. Payara Server is installed at /opt/payara-server, running on Azul Zulu 21. Start the default domain with /opt/payara-server/bin/asadmin start-domain. Once started, the admin console is available at http://<public-dns>:4848 and deployed applications are served on http://<public-dns>:8080. Deploy an application with /opt/payara-server/bin/asadmin deploy /path/to/app.war. Ensure the instance's security group allows inbound access on ports 4848 (admin console) and 8080 (HTTP) if these need to be reached externally.
