What do I get for the hourly rate on each instance size?
You get a running EC2 instance with the OpenMRS software pre-installed on a hardened Ubuntu 22.04 image. Each instance type sets the CPU and memory you receive. Larger sizes like xlarge and 2xlarge give more compute and memory; nano and micro give the least.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or paused?
Software charges accrue only while an instance runs. A stopped instance stops the hourly software charge. You may still owe underlying AWS storage fees for the attached volume, but the software metering counts running time only.
Does switching to a different instance size change my rate automatically?
Yes. Each instance type has its own hourly rate. When you stop an instance and relaunch on a different size, billing follows the new size's rate for the hours it runs. There is no upfront commitment, so you can change sizes as your workload shifts.

Usage instructions
First create an EC2 instance with this AMI. Allow up to 5 minutes for the application to fully initialize after the instance starts. Next, visit http://<instance_ip>/openmrs in order to go through the initial guided OpenMRS configuration.
Follow the instructions on the page - you will be able to choose a type of installation based on your needs. They will require you to provide a password for MySQL which is by default your unique EC2 Instance ID assigned during creation.
After you finish the initial setup, you are free to start using OpenMRS according to your needs.
