What do the GPU and CPU instance choices mean for running Stable Diffusion?
GPU instances (g4dn, g5 families) provide dedicated graphics processors that speed up image generation. CPU instances (c6a, c6i, m3, m4, m5, m5ad, t2, t3, t3a families) work as alternatives when a GPU is not used, but they are slower. The recommended minimum GPU is g4dn.xlarge; the CPU minimum is t2.2xlarge.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or not generating images?
You pay the hourly software rate only while the instance runs. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue software charges. Underlying AWS storage fees may still apply while the instance is stopped. Billing meters running time, so idle-but-running instances still count toward your bill.
How do I move to a different instance size if my needs change?
You select the EC2 instance type at launch, and it defaults to t2.2xlarge. To change size, you stop the instance and pick a new type, then relaunch. The hourly software rate then matches the new instance type you selected. GPU deployments may require an AWS quota request first.
