The AMI helps reduce manual hardening effort and configuration drift across AWS accounts and environments. Deploy and Operate with Confidence
The image is ready for use when launched. Citadel recommends AWS Systems Manager Session Manager (SSM) for administrative access whenever possible so SSH does not need to be exposed to the public Internet.
If SSH is required, use the ec2-user account, your selected EC2 key pair, and tightly scoped network access.

You pay by the hour for a hardened, PCI-focused Amazon Linux 2023 baseline running on ARM64 (Graviton) EC2 instances. Each dimension maps to a specific instance type, so your rate depends on the size and family you launch. General-purpose (m-series), compute-optimized (c-series), memory-optimized (r- and x-series), storage-optimized (i-series), and burstable (t4g) families are all covered. Larger instances and metal options carry higher hourly rates than smaller ones. The software fee applies on top of standard AWS infrastructure charges. There are no upfront commitments; you are billed only for the hours each instance runs.

What do I actually get for the hourly software fee on each instance type?
You get a hardened, PCI-focused Amazon Linux 2023 baseline on ARM64 (Graviton), patched monthly. The software fee covers the maintained operating-system image and US-based support. Your team still owns PCI scope, application security, AWS architecture, identity, networking, logging, and assessor validation. The image does not certify your deployed environment.
Am I charged the software fee when an instance is stopped or powered off?
The software fee meters running hours only. A fully stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. Note that standard AWS storage fees may still apply to attached volumes on stopped instances, but those are AWS infrastructure charges, separate from this listing's software fee.
How does the software fee combine with my AWS compute costs on one bill?
Two charges apply for each running instance-hour. The per-hour software fee for the hardened image is billed on top of standard AWS infrastructure charges for that instance type. Larger or metal instances carry both a higher software rate and higher AWS compute cost. Both appear on the same invoice.

Using PCI Compliant / Hardened Amazon Linux 2023 (ARM)
Connect to Your Instance
We recommend using AWS Systems Manager Session Manager (SSM) whenever possible. It provides a secure way to access your instance without exposing SSH to the public Internet.
If SSH is enabled, limit port 22 in your security group to your trusted IP address whenever possible. For production environments, we recommend deploying the instance inside a private VPC and using SSM or another controlled access method.
Use the documentation to review the image's security baseline, applied controls, validation results, and any documented exceptions.
