Deploy and Operate with Confidence
The image is ready for use when launched. Citadel recommends AWS Systems Manager Session Manager (SSM) for administrative access whenever possible so SSH does not need to be exposed to the public Internet.
If SSH is required, use the ec2-user account, your selected EC2 key pair, and tightly scoped network access.

This AMI is designed to support PCI DSS infrastructure objectives, but launching a hardened image does not by itself make an application, AWS account, cardholder data environment, or organization PCI DSS compliant.
Customers remain responsible for the security and compliance of their complete environment, including application security, IAM, network segmentation, encryption, key and secret management, logging, monitoring, vulnerability management, backups, incident response, operational procedures, and compliance validation.

Smaller instances like t2.nano carry lower hourly rates, while large memory, storage, GPU, and bare-metal instances cost more per hour. You add the AWS infrastructure charge on top. There is no upfront commitment; billing runs only while an instance stays running, so you match spend to actual usage.

Am I charged the software fee when my instance is stopped or powered off?
The hourly software fee applies only while an instance runs. Stopped or powered-off instances do not accrue the software charge. Note that AWS may still bill underlying storage for a stopped instance, but the image itself meters running time only.
What am I actually paying for beyond the compute, and what does my team still own?
You pay for a hardened, PCI-focused Amazon Linux 2023 baseline patched monthly, plus US-based support. Your team still owns PCI scope, application security, AWS architecture, identity, network controls, logging, evidence retention, and assessor validation. The image does not cover those layers.
How does my hourly cost change if I move to a larger instance type?
Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type. Your software rate is tied to the type you launch, so switching to a memory-heavy, storage-heavy, GPU, or bare-metal instance raises the hourly rate. Smaller general-purpose types carry lower rates. You choose the type at launch.

Using PCI Compliant / Hardened Amazon Linux 2023
Connect to Your Instance
We recommend using AWS Systems Manager Session Manager (SSM) whenever possible. It provides a secure way to access your instance without exposing SSH to the public Internet.
If SSH is enabled, limit port 22 in your security group to your trusted IP address whenever possible. For production environments, we recommend deploying the instance inside a private VPC and using SSM or another controlled access method.
Use the documentation to review the image's security baseline, applied controls, validation results, and any documented exceptions.
