You pay by the hour for the software, billed per running Amazon EC2 instance. Pricing is not tiered by features. Instead, each dimension matches a specific EC2 instance type, so your hourly rate follows the instance you choose. Options span general-purpose families (t2, t3, t3a, m3, m4, m5) and variants with added memory bandwidth, local storage, or network capacity (m5a, m5n, m5d, m5ad, m5dn), including bare-metal sizes. Rates rise as instance size grows, from nano and micro up through 24xlarge and metal. Hourly charges stop when you stop the instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each unit is one running Amazon EC2 instance of the type you select. Your hourly rate matches that specific instance type. If you run several instances at once, each one accrues its own hourly software charge. Billing counts active instance-hours, not users or data volume.
Software charges accrue only while the instance runs. Stopping the instance halts the hourly software charge. Note that AWS may still bill underlying storage for a stopped instance, but that is separate from the software fee metered here.
The rate follows the instance you choose. Larger sizes, such as 24xlarge or metal, carry higher hourly software rates than smaller sizes like nano or micro. You can switch instance types to match your workload, and your rate adjusts to the new type.
