You pay by the hour for the Squid 7.1 proxy server software, and the rate depends on the Amazon EC2 instance type you run it on. The software is the same across all options; only the underlying compute differs. Choose from the t2, t3, and t3a burstable families and the m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5ad, m5d, m5dn, and m5n general-purpose families. Sizes range from nano and micro up to 24xlarge and bare-metal instances. Larger instances carry more CPU, memory, and networking, so their hourly rates rise accordingly. You are billed only for the hours you run.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hour of billing cover for this Squid proxy server?
You are billed per hour that your chosen EC2 instance runs the Squid 7.1 software. One hour equals one running instance-hour. The rate bundles the software licence with the instance size you select. Running instances accrue charges; the meter tracks running time only.
Am I charged the hourly software rate when my instance is stopped?
The software rate applies only while the instance runs. Stopped instances do not accrue software charges. Note that stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but those are separate from the Squid software licence billed here.
How do I pick the right instance type, and does the software differ between them?
The Squid 7.1 software is identical across every instance type. You choose based on needed CPU, memory, and networking. Burstable t2, t3, and t3a families suit lighter or variable traffic. The m-series families suit steady, higher-throughput proxy loads. Larger sizes carry higher hourly rates.
