Pricing is tied to the Amazon EC2 instance size you choose, so the software rate scales with the compute capacity you select. The 18 options span several instance families: general-purpose t2 and t3 sizes, AMD-based t3a sizes, and one m4.large. Sizes range from nano and micro up to 2xlarge. Smaller sizes suit light or intermittent use; larger sizes handle heavier workloads. AWS EC2 infrastructure charges apply separately from the hourly software rate, and you run instances only as long as you need.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each rate maps to one Amazon EC2 instance size. Instance families set the balance of CPU and memory: t2 and t3 are general-purpose, t3a use AMD processors, and m4.large is a general-purpose size. Larger sizes like 2xlarge give more vCPUs and memory than nano or micro sizes.
The hourly software rate meters only running instance time. When you stop or terminate an instance, the software charge stops accruing. Underlying AWS storage fees may still apply while an instance is stopped, but those are billed separately by AWS.
Two charges apply together for each running instance. The hourly software rate covers the preconfigured Swift environment. Separately, AWS bills you for the EC2 instance and any storage. Both scale with the instance size you select and how long you run it.
