See AWS Free Tier for more details. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the software on the EC2 instance type you choose. Pricing scales with instance size and capability, not by feature tiers. Each dimension maps to a specific AWS instance, from small burstable types like t2.nano and t3.micro up to large compute, memory, storage, and GPU instances such as x1e.32xlarge, p4d.24xlarge, and d3en.12xlarge. Larger or specialized instances carry higher hourly rates because they provide more CPU, memory, or accelerator resources. You run the same Kali Linux image across all options and select the instance matching your workload.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billed hour represent for each instance type?
One hour maps to one running EC2 instance of your chosen type. You pay the software rate for each hour the instance runs. The rate reflects that instance's CPU, memory, storage, and any GPU resources. Charges continue for every hour the instance stays running.
Am I charged the software fee when my instance is stopped?
The hourly software fee meters running time only. A stopped instance does not accrue software charges. AWS may still bill underlying storage for the volume while the instance is stopped, but the software license itself charges by running hour.
Do I get the same Kali Linux image and tools no matter which instance I pick?
Yes. Every instance type runs the same image with a GUI desktop and 2500+ pre-installed security tools for penetration testing and auditing. Your instance choice changes only the compute, memory, storage, or GPU resources available, not the software or feature set.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
