What do I actually receive for the hourly rate on a given instance type?
You get a hardened Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 image with Docker preinstalled, running on the AWS EC2 instance type you select. The image is configured to STIG security recommendations. The hourly software rate is separate from the AWS infrastructure charge for that instance.
Am I charged when I stop or pause the instance?
The software rate meters running time by the hour. When you stop the instance, the hourly software charge stops accruing. Note that AWS may still charge for underlying resources like attached storage while the instance is stopped, but that is separate from the software fee.
Why do the hourly rates differ so much across the instance options?
Each option maps to one EC2 instance type. The rate follows that instance's size and family. A small shared instance like t3.micro carries a low rate. Large memory-optimized, compute-optimized, storage-optimized, GPU, or bare-metal instances like p5.48xlarge or m8i.metal-96xl carry higher rates.

Connecting to the Virtual Machine
To connect to your instance, use SSH over port 22. The default username for this image is ec2-user.
This image is pre-hardened with over 200 security controls applied by default.
No additional setup or configuration is required after launch.
You can begin using the virtual machine immediately with a secure baseline already in place.
Accessing Docker
Docker is pre-installed on this instance.
To confirm Docker is installed, open a terminal and run the following command:
docker --version
This will display the installed Docker Engine version.
To run a sample container, use this command:
docker run hello-world
This command will pull a test image from Docker Hub and launch a container to verify that Docker is working correctly.
You should see a message confirming that Docker is operational.
