You pay by the hour for the software running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance. Pricing is usage-based, so charges accrue only while your instance runs. The many options here are not feature tiers. Each one maps to a specific EC2 instance type, spanning general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, and GPU-accelerated families in sizes from nano to metal. Larger instances carry higher hourly rates because they provide more CPU, memory, or specialized resources. You pick the instance that fits your workload and scale up or down by switching types.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You are charged for each hour the software runs on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance. One unit equals one running instance-hour of that specific instance type. The rate reflects the instance size and family you select. Counting is based on running time, not on the number of users or data volume.
Software charges accrue only while the instance runs. When you stop or power off the instance, hourly software charges stop. Note that underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes may still apply while the instance is stopped, but the software meter tracks running time only.
You control cost by choosing your instance type. Switching to a different family or size changes your hourly rate, since larger instances provide more CPU, memory, or specialized resources. To lower cost, move to a smaller type. To add capacity, move to a larger one. Charges follow the running instance type.
