Pre-configured Nextcloud AMI by Cloud Ops Group with Nginx, MariaDB, and PHP 8. Deploy a private file sync and collaboration platform on your own AWS instance.
Private File Sharing and Collaboration - Ready to Deploy
Cloud Ops Group (COG) delivers a pre-configured Nextcloud AMI that lets IT teams and small businesses launch a fully private collaboration platform on AWS in minutes. Instead of relying on third-party SaaS providers, you maintain complete ownership of your files, calendars, and contacts within your own VPC.
Who This Is For
This AMI is built for DevOps engineers, IT administrators, and business owners who need:
A self-hosted alternative to Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive
Data sovereignty for teams handling sensitive client files or regulated data
A private collaboration hub for distributed teams needing file sync, shared calendars, and real-time document editing
Example use case: A 50-person professional services firm replaces consumer cloud storage with this Nextcloud instance to keep client-confidential documents within their own AWS environment, using CalDAV calendaring and CardDAV contacts to unify team workflows without third-party data access.
What Is Included
Nextcloud Server - Latest stable release with file sync, sharing, CalDAV, CardDAV, and photo galleries
Nginx - High-performance web server, pre-configured as reverse proxy
MariaDB - Production-ready relational database for Nextcloud metadata
PHP 8 - Latest major PHP version for performance and security
64-bit Linux - Lightweight base operating system
Key Capabilities
File Synchronization: Sync files across desktop, mobile, and web clients with conflict resolution
Calendar and Contacts: Built-in CalDAV and CardDAV servers replace external scheduling tools
Photo Galleries: Organize and share image libraries with granular access controls
Extensible: Install additional Nextcloud apps for Talk (video calls), Office document editing, and more
Security and Data Control
Because this AMI runs entirely within your AWS account, your data never leaves your infrastructure. Key security considerations:
All data resides on your EBS volumes - enable EBS encryption for encryption at rest
Configure HTTPS via the pre-installed Nginx reverse proxy with your own SSL certificate
Deploy within a private VPC subnet and restrict access via Security Groups
No telemetry or data is sent to Cloud Ops Group or third parties
Requirements and Limitations
Recommended instance: t3.medium or larger for up to 25 concurrent users; scale to m5.large for heavier workloads
Storage: Attach EBS volumes sized to your file storage needs; gp3 recommended
Security Groups: Open ports 80 and 443 for web access; port 22 for SSH administration
Not included: SSL certificates (bring your own or use Let's Encrypt), SMTP configuration for email notifications, automated backups (configure via AWS Backup or cron), and DNS setup
Region availability: Works in all AWS regions that support EC2

Highlights
Pre-configured production stack with Nextcloud Server, Nginx, MariaDB, and PHP 8 on 64-bit Linux. Launch from AWS Marketplace and complete the setup wizard to have a working private collaboration platform. No manual package installation or dependency management required - the AMI is ready to serve files, calendars, and contacts immediately after initial configuration.
Full data sovereignty within your own AWS account. Your files, calendars, and contacts stay on your EBS volumes inside your VPC - no data is shared with Cloud Ops Group or any third party. Enable EBS encryption for at-rest protection, configure HTTPS via the included Nginx reverse proxy, and restrict network access through Security Groups for a hardened deployment.
Built-in collaboration beyond file storage. Synchronize files across unlimited desktop and mobile clients, manage team schedules with CalDAV calendar sync, unify contact directories with CardDAV, organize photo galleries with granular sharing permissions, and extend functionality with the Nextcloud app ecosystem including Talk for video conferencing and collaborative document editing.

You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance that runs this self-hosted file sharing software. Pricing is not tiered by features. Instead, you pick one instance type, and the hourly rate follows the size and family you choose. Options span compute-optimized (C-family), general-purpose (M-family), memory-optimized (R and X families), storage-focused (D, H, I families), and GPU or accelerated types (G, P, F, DL families). Larger sizes within a family cost more per hour. All choices deliver the same software; you scale cost by matching instance capacity to your workload.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually get for the hourly instance rate?
You pay for one running EC2 instance that hosts this file sharing software. The rate covers the instance size and family you pick, from small shared-CPU types up to large multi-core, GPU, or bare-metal machines. All types run the same software; capacity is the only variable.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped?
Software charges meter running hours, so a fully stopped instance stops accruing the hourly software fee. Stopped instances may still incur separate AWS storage fees for attached volumes. Charges resume when you start the instance again. Billing tracks actual running time only.
How do I move to a bigger or smaller instance later?
You launch a different instance type from the listing and the hourly rate updates to match that size and family. There is no feature-based upgrade path, since every type runs identical software. You scale cost by matching instance capacity to your workload, changing types when needs change.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
