Overview
Nginx is an open source web server and reverse proxy known for handling many connections with little memory. People use it to host websites, serve static files, and sit in front of applications as a reverse proxy or load balancer. This image gives developers and site owners a clean, tuned Nginx server in minutes, with guided scripts for the jobs you do most.
What is included: Nginx 1.30.4 from the official nginx.org stable repository on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Certbot for free Let's Encrypt certificates, ready-made snippets for security headers, caching, proxy settings and rate limits, and three helper scripts. add_site.sh adds a static site or a reverse proxy and tests the configuration before applying it, setup_ssl.sh checks your DNS and then switches a site to HTTPS with automatic renewal, and pass_status.sh protects the live status page. Worker settings are tuned to the instance size on first boot. Security is on by default: the status page gets its own password on first boot, and SSH accepts key-based login only.
What you get on top of the free software: a pre-built and tested image that is ready in minutes, a unique security setup for every server, simple scripts for changing passwords, regular image updates, and help by email whenever you need it. Nginx is open source software licensed under BSD-2-Clause, and Certbot under Apache-2.0. NGINX is a trademark of F5, Inc. This image is an independent build by ProvenCloud.
Highlights
- Ready in minutes: launch the instance and open its public IP to see the welcome page. Add a website or reverse proxy with one guided script, then switch it to HTTPS with another.
- Secure by default: no shared or default passwords. The live status page gets its own password on first boot, security headers and rate-limit snippets are ready to use, and SSH accepts key-based login only.
- Simple and fast: Nginx 1.30 from the official nginx.org stable repository, tuned workers, and free Let's Encrypt certificates that renew on their own.

Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Version release notes

Additional details
Usage instructions
Once the instance is running, enter http://<instance-public-ip> into your browser to see the welcome page. The live status page is at http://<instance-public-ip>/nginx_status; sign in with admin as the username and your instance ID as the password. You can also connect over SSH with the username ubuntu and your Amazon key pair.
Required inbound ports: 22 (SSH), 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS). For security, allow port 22 only from your own IP address.
Your instance ID is shown in the EC2 console, for example i-0123456789abcdef0. Every instance sets its own passwords on first boot, so no two instances share a password. Allow two to three minutes after launch for the first-boot setup to finish before you sign in.
Add your first site: connect over SSH and run sudo bash /home/ubuntu/iscripts/add_site.sh, then sudo bash /home/ubuntu/iscripts/setup_ssl.sh to get a free certificate once your domain points at this server. Change the status page password with pass_status.sh in the same folder. README.txt there lists useful commands and the file layout.
