See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for each running instance, with no upfront commitment. The price you pay depends on which EC2 instance type you launch. The dimensions map directly to AWS instance families and sizes, so cost scales with the compute, memory, or GPU resources you choose. General-purpose (t2, t3, m3, m4, m6a), compute-optimized (c3, c5, c6a), memory-optimized (r5a, r6a), storage-optimized (d3), and GPU-based (g3, g3s, p2, p3) options are available. Larger sizes within a family bill at higher hourly rates. You select the instance that fits your workload.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly rate cover, and am I charged when the instance is stopped?
The hourly rate covers the running software on your chosen instance while it is active. You are billed per hour that the instance runs. Fully stopped instances do not accrue software charges. Note that AWS may still bill underlying storage for stopped instances separately from this software fee.
How do I choose between the compute, memory, storage, and GPU instance dimensions?
Each dimension maps to an AWS instance family. Compute-optimized (c3, c5, c6a) suits processing-heavy tasks. Memory-optimized (r5a, r6a) fits data held in RAM. Storage-optimized (d3) targets large local disk needs. GPU types (g3, g3s, p2, p3) handle graphics or machine learning. General-purpose types balance all resources.
What software comes pre-configured on this image?
The image runs Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with container tooling already installed and configured. This includes tools for building, running, and copying container images. The vendor also hardens images to align with recognized security and compliance frameworks. No per-scan or extra tooling fees apply beyond the hourly instance rate.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
