ChaosSearch is an AWS Advanced Technology Partner that enables customers to Know Better™ by unleashing their ability to find, access, and analyze information in their Amazon S3 cloud storage. ChaosSearch transforms your Amazon S3 into a hot analytical data lake that works with existing analytics tools.
The ChaosSearch Data Lake Platform indexes customers' Amazon S3 data, enabling search, SQL and machine learning workloads with infinite scale, lower cost, no data movement, and faster time to insights. Whereas all other solutions require complex data pipelines consisting of parsing or schema changes, ChaosSearch indexes all data as-is, without transformation, while optimizing for both data size and performance. Through open APIs, users continue working in the tools they know and trust, such as Kibana, Elastic, Looker, and Tableau.
ChaosSearch and AWS overcome the cost and complexity of competitive solutions, unlocking data retention limits and reducing costs up to 80%.
ChaosSearch is a fully managed service and is priced based on the ingest rate of data into Amazon S3. Unlike other solutions, ChaosSearch eliminates administrative toil such as re-indexing, sharding, load balancing, and managing compute and storage. Our customers enjoy unlimited data retention, enabling analysis back to any point in time. ChaosSearch customers typically realize up to 80% direct cost savings vs. a traditional log analytics solution like the self-hosted ELK stack.
Highlights
- Immediate, Complete Access without Movement - No load balancing, no re-indexing, no managing trade-offs between cluster resources and amount of data retained, and no need to transform your data to a different schema.
- Unlimited Data Retention - By having access to all of your data over time, analysis can take place over any time horizon, delivering significantly better insights.
- Rapid Time to Value - Connect to S3, access data, analyze with your existing analytics tools via native integrations and open APIs.

Cost-effective logging solution with room for search and interface improvement
What is our primary use case?
Our primary use case is logging for everything within the company. We have a custom LogShipper, and for whatever deployments we have, we add the LogShipper into our containers, apply customer configurations to parse log files, and send desired fields to ChaosSearch . We then review logs on ChaosSearch .
How has it helped my organization?
During my time at the company, I didn't see any improvements from using ChaosSearch. We faced some struggles, and it's unclear whether the problem was with the search function itself or due to incorrect configuration by our team.
What is most valuable?
ChaosSearch is considered a cheaper alternative to Elastic. The decision to choose this vendor was likely influenced by its lower cost, especially as pricing was a major concern. It also provides the same tooling set as Elastic, including open-source Elasticsearch and Kibana query language.
What needs improvement?
The user interface could be more intuitive and requires improvement. The search function often feels wonky, making it difficult to find specific messages. There should be documentation or feature enhancements to aid in more accurate searches.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using ChaosSearch for a little over a year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
ChaosSearch appears to be stable, as I have not experienced any crashes or downtimes.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability-wise, I haven't seen any issues with ChaosSearch, although finding specific messages is challenging due to limitations with searching logs.
How are customer service and support?
I haven't heard about any technical support being provided for ChaosSearch.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Before ChaosSearch, some teams might have used OpenSearch . However, ChaosSearch has become standardized across the company.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was handled by another team, and they provided the necessary installation packages and configurations, so I have no personal experience.
What about the implementation team?
The setup and maintenance are managed internally by another team within the company.
What was our ROI?
ChaosSearch provides the functionality expected for logging. That said, it's challenging to find the specific messages needed.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Pricing was a significant factor in choosing ChaosSearch, especially as an alternative to more expensive solutions like Elastic.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
The company might have considered Elastic and OpenSearch , and the primary reason for switching was cost.
What other advice do I have?
I am not familiar enough with search solutions to compare ChaosSearch to others critically, but OpenSearch might be preferable due to its open-source nature and integration with AWSÂ .
I'd rate the solution six out of ten.
