This product is a comprehensive Nostr relay server solution available on AWS Marketplace that enables you to quickly deploy and manage your own Nostr relay infrastructure. It provides automated deployment through CloudFormation, built-in SSL/TLS certificate management via Let's Encrypt, extensive monitoring capabilities, and a full test suite to validate functionality. The solution is designed for both individual relay operators and organizations looking to participate in the Nostr network while maintaining control over their infrastructure. It handles all the complex infrastructure setup and security configurations, allowing you to focus on operating your relay rather than managing infrastructure.
The Nostr Relay offers the following features:
Optimized to run on ARM-based instances
Built on nostr-rs-relay for optimal performance
Docker-based deployment for consistency and isolation
AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
You pay by the hour for the AWS Graviton instance you choose to run the Nostr relay. Each dimension maps to a specific instance type and size, from small burstable options like t4g.nano up to large compute, memory, and storage-optimized types such as c7g.metal or im4gn.16xlarge. Pricing scales with the size and family of the instance you pick. Larger instances and higher-capacity families carry higher hourly rates. You only pay for the hours you run. Your bill combines the AWS infrastructure cost plus a small vendor fee for the chosen instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hour of the chosen instance cover, and am I charged when the instance is stopped?
Each dimension bills per hour that the selected Graviton instance runs. You pay for actual running hours plus a small vendor fee. A fully stopped instance stops accruing hourly software charges. Underlying AWS storage, such as EBS volumes and backups, may still incur separate AWS fees while the instance is stopped.
What happens to my cost if I change the instance type after launching the relay?
You change the instance type by updating the InstanceType parameter in the CloudFormation stack. This replaces the instance with the new type, deployed in the same subnet and VPC. Your hourly rate then switches to match the new instance dimension. You pay the rate for whichever type is running at that time.
Does the hourly price include AWS infrastructure, or is that billed separately?
Your bill combines the AWS infrastructure cost plus a small vendor fee. The listing meters running instance-hours, so charges follow the compute you actually run. Optional features like daily backups and KMS encryption use AWS services, which can add separate underlying AWS charges beyond the metered hourly rate.

The CloudFormation template creates the following key resources:
EC2 Instance running the Nostr relay software
EBS volume for persistent data storage (size configurable)
Elastic IP for stable public IP address
Security groups allowing HTTP/HTTPS access
IAM roles and policies for instance permissions
KMS key for encryption of EBS volumes
Optional Route53 DNS record pointing to the relay
Optional AWS Backup plan for daily backups
Optional SSH access if key pair and CIDR provided
The relay instance runs on an ARM-based t4g instance type (configurable size) and uses a custom AMI with the relay software pre-installed. The instance mounts an encrypted EBS volume for the Nostr database storage.
Security is enforced through IAM roles, security groups, and KMS encryption. The instance can be accessed via AWS Systems Manager Session Manager, with optional SSH access if configured.
CloudFormation Template (CFT)
AWS CloudFormation templates are JSON or YAML-formatted text files that simplify provisioning and management on AWS. The templates describe the service or application architecture you want to deploy, and AWS CloudFormation uses those templates to provision and configure the required services (such as Amazon EC2 instances or Amazon RDS DB instances). The deployed application and associated resources are called a "stack."
