You pay by the hour for this operating system on the AWS instance type you choose. Prices scale with instance size and family. The c8i options cover compute workloads, with sizes from xlarge up to 96xlarge. The g6e and g7e options add GPU capacity for AI and graphics work, ranging from xlarge to 48xlarge. The hpc7a and hpc8a options target high-performance computing at 48xlarge and 96xlarge sizes. Larger instances carry higher hourly rates because they provide more compute, memory, or GPU resources. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do the different instance families in the pricing table mean for my workload?
The c8i options provide CPU-based compute for general and simulation work. The g6e and g7e options add GPU capacity for AI, machine learning, and graphics tasks. The hpc7a and hpc8a options target high-performance computing jobs. You pick the family that matches your workload type.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or paused?
The hourly software charge meters running time only. When you stop an instance, the per-hour software charge stops accruing. Underlying AWS storage or other resources tied to a stopped instance may still incur separate AWS fees, but the operating system licence bills active running hours.
How is one hour of usage counted for billing?
Each running instance is billed per hour based on the instance type you selected. A larger size within a family carries a higher hourly rate because it provides more compute, memory, or GPU resources. You are billed separately for each instance you run.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
