The AMI helps reduce manual hardening effort and configuration drift across AWS accounts and environments. This image is built for x86-64 EC2 instances and supports x86-64 EC2 instance families and x86-64-native application stacks.
Deploy and Operate with Confidence
The image is ready for use when launched. Citadel recommends AWS Systems Manager Session Manager (SSM) for administrative access whenever possible so SSH does not need to be exposed to the public Internet.
If SSH is required, use the ec2-user account, your selected EC2 key pair, and tightly scoped network access.

Each one maps to a specific EC2 instance type, from small general-purpose sizes to large memory, compute, storage, and GPU-optimized machines. Your hourly software cost changes based on which instance type you launch. Larger or specialized instances carry different rates than smaller ones. You choose the instance that fits your workload, and pay only for the hours you run.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Am I charged for the software when my instance is stopped or powered off?
The software meters running instance-hours only. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue software charges. Note that AWS may still bill you for attached storage while the instance sits stopped. You pay the hourly software rate only while the instance runs.
What does one billing hour actually cover, and what does my team still own?
One hour covers the hardened Amazon Linux 2 operating-system baseline running on your chosen EC2 instance. Your team still owns application code, network setup, identity, logging, and compliance validation. The image provides the hardened OS layer; it does not manage your wider environment.
Does my hourly rate change if I switch to a different EC2 instance type?
Yes. Your software rate is tied to the specific instance type you launch. Moving from a small general-purpose size to a large memory, compute, storage, or GPU instance changes the hourly rate. The change takes effect when you launch on the new instance type.
