You pay by the hour for this software running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance. Each pricing line matches one EC2 instance type, so your rate depends on the instance you select. Options span many instance families, including general-purpose (t, m), compute-optimized (c), memory-optimized (r, x, u, z), storage-optimized (d, i, h), and accelerated computing (g, p, inf, trn, dl, vt). Larger sizes within a family carry higher hourly rates because they provide more compute, memory, or storage. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs, with no upfront commitment.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly pricing line cover — the software licence, the operating system, or the EC2 compute?
Each hourly rate covers the software packaged in the image, which pairs SQL Server 2025 Standard with Ubuntu Server 24.04. You pick one EC2 instance type, and that line sets your software rate. The underlying EC2 compute is billed separately by AWS at its own instance rate.
Am I charged the hourly software rate when my EC2 instance is stopped or paused?
Charges accrue only while the instance runs. A stopped or paused instance does not accrue software hours. You may still pay AWS for attached storage, such as EBS volumes, while the instance is stopped, but the software meter counts running time only.
Why do prices differ across instance types, and does my rate change if I resize the instance?
Each instance type carries its own hourly software rate, and larger sizes within a family cost more because they offer more compute, memory, or storage. If you launch a different instance type, that type's rate applies. The change is tied to which instance you run, not automatic on your current one.
