Smaller instances like t2.nano and t3.micro suit light workloads. Larger families such as m5, c5, r5, and metal or high-memory u-series instances handle heavier database processing. Billing runs only while an instance runs, with no upfront commitment. Pick the instance that matches your performance needs, and the hourly rate follows that selection.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each unit is one hour that a single EC2 instance runs this pre-configured image. You pick one instance type, such as m5.large or c5.xlarge, and pay its hourly rate for every hour it stays running. Running two instances bills each one separately.
The hourly software rate meters only running time. A stopped instance does not accrue software charges. You may still owe underlying AWS fees, such as storage for the attached volume, but the image itself bills per running hour.
Your hourly rate follows the instance type you run. Moving to an instance with more compute, memory, or storage raises the rate. Moving to a smaller one lowers it. The change takes effect when you launch the new instance; there is no commitment tying you to one type.

- SSH to the instance using the instance's public IP and log in as the 'ubuntu' user, using the key specified when you launched the instance.
- Once logged in, use the command sudo su - to switch to the root user and get a root prompt.
