The many options span general-purpose (m, t), compute-optimized (c), memory-optimized (r, x, z), storage (d, i, h), and accelerated (g, p, inf, trn) families, plus bare-metal and high-memory sizes. Larger instances with more CPU, memory, or specialized hardware cost more per hour. You pay only for the hours each instance runs, so cost scales with your chosen size and runtime.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each hour covers the software preloaded on one running Amazon EC2 instance of your chosen type. This includes SQL Server 2025 on Ubuntu 22 with the database monitor. You pay the hourly rate tied to that specific instance type for every hour it runs.
The software rate meters only running hours. A stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. Underlying AWS resources, such as attached storage, may still bill separately from AWS. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
Each instance type carries its own hourly rate, with no shared tier. Moving to a type with more CPU, memory, or specialized hardware applies that type's higher hourly rate for the hours it runs. The change takes effect when you launch the new instance.

Usage instructions
To connect to your instance:
- SSH to the instance using the instance's public IP and log in as the 'ubuntu' user, using the key specified when you launched the instance.
- Once logged in, use the command sudo su - to switch to the root user and get a root prompt.
