You pay by the hour for the software running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance. Each dimension maps to a specific instance type, so pricing scales with the compute you select. Smaller instances like t3.nano and m1.small carry lower hourly rates. Larger and specialized instances, such as memory-optimized r-series, compute-optimized c-series, GPU g- and p-series, and storage-focused i- and d-series, carry higher rates. You run the same WordPress on Ubuntu 20 image across all options. Choose the instance family and size that fit your workload, and your hourly cost follows that choice.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
One unit is one running Amazon EC2 instance of the type you select, billed per hour. The rate covers the software license on that single instance. If you launch two instances, you pay two hourly rates. Counting follows the running hours of each instance you start.
The software rate meters running instance-hours. A fully stopped instance does not accrue this hourly software charge. You may still owe separate AWS fees for attached storage while the instance sits stopped. Charges resume once you start the instance again.
